Trick for quieting the congregation before sacrament meeting -- I found it very useful in one ward.

• An organist is not there to instruct the bishopric on their duties, but if this is explained once to one of them, they can decide if it seems suitable now.
• Or to simplify, maybe just tell the bishopric member over music, that there could be a 20-second experimental break in the prelude for this, to...
• If all on the rostrum are there about 5 minutes before the meeting, sitting quietly, it can work. If not, it probably will not.
• Also, it worked well for me in a ward where (at the time, 3-hour block), sacrament meeting was last. So people were there (not late), but noisy in the chapel.
• Starting 10-12 minutes before the meeting began, I would play more majestic hymns, and noticeably louder -- like the closing hymn of stake conference is bigger.
• Then at about the 5-6 minute mark, *after* the bishop was seated, I would STOP all music for ~20 seconds.
• During that 20 seconds or so I would turn in my hymnbook to where I had prepared (with bookmarks or paper clips) some hymns that I knew well.
• I would try to be sure to play it softly and beautifully as I could, so they would listen to it and think about the Savior, and be ready for Sacrament Meeting.
• But one has to practice, prepare, pray, and observe -- it is all depending on if people are there & responsive, and what seems to work well.
