One big help in my youth was that it was very easy for me to get in & practice the organ -- just call out to Dad "I'm taking the key..." and walk over.
I always waited for him to answer, of course, to make sure it was OK.
Later on, living in a different state, I was asked to play for the hymn singing for a stake fireside or something. The organ was unfamiliar.
(I didn't realize that an organ sound speaker being very near the organist made me play far too softly--it wasn't loud enough for anyone else.)
Another example of why getting suggestions from others, perhaps repeatedly, is a good idea.
