• Surely music teaching specialists or majors know better ways to do all this, this is my guess or how I might continue, having mostly learned reading music only.
• They say that listening is key! (And later, for example, playing along with recorded or broadcast music, or with other live people.)
• Can one sing "twinkle, twinkle, little star" or some such, with pitch? Can tell when the notes are wrong if anyone tries to pick it out on a piano in key of C?
• In listening, can you hear the bass note of the current chord? Is it a 1st, 4th, or 5th, or other? Ask someone to show you. How does that change make it feel?
• Have fun doing it! with different songs. Maybe have a keyboard that can record some through a pattern, get up n dance, get people dancing, then add variations?
• So maybe some time practicing starting there, with maybe progressing over time to variations of other simple chords in the scale, inversions, 7ths, etc etc.
• And then learning left-hand patterns (or equivalent for other instruments?) like stride rhythms, Alberti bass, or others from wkp or my basic piano/majors book.
• And something with ear training to be able to pick out melodies better. (apps? relate each pitch on scale to a favorite melody's interval as they say). Sch?
• Then make the RH add 3rds (practice from Hanon), other parts of chords, other keys, scales/arpeggios, maybe combine...
• There is also a book on how to improvise, related to levels in the British school system or such, that has interesting tips for rhythm, non-piano maybe, &c..?
