It helps me at least, in figuring out what chord it should be, to start with the tonic (like C), then when it "changes" I can tell what "goes with" the...

• ...the chord sounding right or now: a combo of tonic (C + the G below it), or a 4th (C + the F below it), or move off C (to G/B/D).
• I can also sometimes "play the scale" in my head, or step through it, to figure something out.
• So maybe after one note works, or if it helps hear what is right, play 1 or 2 notes (or later more?) of any given chord.
