It helps me at least, in figuring out what chord it should be, to start with the tonic (like C), then when it "changes" I can tell what "goes with" the...
...the chord sounding right or now: a combo of tonic (C + the G below it), or a 4th (C + the F below it), or move off C (to G/B/D).
I can also sometimes "play the scale" in my head, or step through it, to figure something out.
So maybe after one note works, or if it helps hear what is right, play 1 or 2 notes (or later more?) of any given chord.
