The purpose of what we do in the Church is invite all to come to Christ and be perfected in Him.
So, music should help with that, and not ever be a distraction.
If it is badly done -- choppy, wrong notes, volume, choice of music, style etc -- it doesn't help, and can distract or distress worshippers.
But, if it is beautiful and peaceful, using the right music, it can share gospel principles that lead to peace in this life & eternal life in the world to come.
It can also help the Church meetings in the chapel be an elevating, good experience -- again, to invite the Spirit and lead us all to Christ.
Our own spiritual development by gospel study and obedience helps refine us for this purpose.
I think there is no substitute for praying before doing anything. (See verses in 2 Ne 30 or 31 about praying so our performance is consecrated for gain. Etc.)
